Guide

How to install GIFt, record, review a recording, and change its settings.

Install

  1. Download the latest GIFt.dmg.
  2. Open it and drag GIFt to the Applications folder.
  3. Open GIFt from Applications. Its icon appears in the menu bar, and the Settings window opens to finish setup.

GIFt needs macOS 13 Ventura or later and runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Releases are signed and notarized, so macOS opens them without a Gatekeeper warning. Each release lists the DMG's SHA-256 for checking the download.

Permissions

GIFt asks for one permission and can use two more. It never prompts for the optional ones on its own. The Permissions section of Settings lists all three with what each one does and a button to grant it.

PermissionNeeded for
Screen RecordingRequired. GIFt cannot capture anything without it. macOS may ask you to quit and reopen GIFt after you grant it.
Input MonitoringOptional. Lets Esc Escape cancel a recording while another app is in front. Escape while you select an area works without it.
AccessibilityOptional. Brings only the window you chose to the front, instead of every window its app has open. Used only when Bring window to front is on.

To change a permission later, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security.

Record an area

  1. Click the GIFt icon in the menu bar and choose Select Area…
  2. Drag a box over what you want to record. It can be on any display.
  3. Recording starts as soon as you let go. If you turned off Start recording after selecting, choose Start Recording from the menu when you are ready.

An outline stays around the area so you can see what is being recorded. GIFt's own windows, including the outline and its buttons, never appear in a recording.

Press Esc Escape while dragging to back out without selecting anything.

Record a window

Choose Select Window from the menu and pick a window from the list. The list shows every open window, frontmost first, by title and app.

A window recording captures that window's own content. You can move it, and other windows can cover it, without changing what is recorded. With Bring window to front on, GIFt raises the window before recording starts.

While recording

Two buttons sit beside the outline:

From the keyboard, ⌘ Esc stops and saves from any app. You can change that shortcut in Settings. Esc Escape cancels the recording and throws it away.

Clicks inside the recording are marked with a ring, so viewers can see where you clicked. Turn this off with Highlight clicks in Settings.

Review and save

When a recording stops, the review window plays it back. Before anything is written, you can:

A saved recording is also copied to the clipboard as a file, so pasting it into Slack, a GitHub issue, or an email attaches it. GIFt then opens it in Quick Look.

GIF or MP4? GIF plays everywhere, inline, with no player. MP4 makes much smaller files when a recording has a lot of motion, such as scrolling or video.

Files are named gift-<time>.gif or .mp4. To keep files small, GIFt caps the longer side at 1280 pixels, or 960 pixels at 24 fps and above. Turn off Review before saving to skip this window and save straight away in your chosen format.

Settings

Open Settings from the menu, or press ⌘ , while the menu is open. Every change applies as you make it.

Agents

Lets coding agents and AI apps drive GIFt. Off until you turn it on. See Agents.

Updates

Choose Check for Updates… from the menu. GIFt asks GitHub for the latest release and shows the result at the bottom of Settings, with a link to download it. GIFt never checks on its own and never updates itself.

Privacy

GIFt captures only the area or window you select, and only after you grant Screen Recording. Recordings are saved on your Mac. GIFt sends no telemetry and uploads nothing. Its only network request is to GitHub's public releases API, and only when you choose Check for Updates.

GIFt listens on a socket in your Library folder that only your own user account can open, and refuses every request on it until you turn on agent control. See Agents for what turning it on allows.
